In Corpus Christi Texas, a grandmother will be given custody of her four grand children after her son, Ryan Sanders, and his wife, Heather Sanders, were found homeless on a beach. Beth Davis has overseen the children’s medical care since the arrest.
The Sanders were not in court when Judge Brent Chesney decided if the children should remain in the care of Child Protective Services or be given to their grandmother. The Sanders’s attorney says photos or videos of the couple in shackles will bias a jury if they go to trial for injury to a child. Police found the couple living on the beach with their four daughters and a newborn. Their children were on the verge of starvation.
The kids were all placed in child protective services custody after the parents’ arrest. Their grandmother, Beth Davis, arrived in town from South Carolina to care for the children. According to court papers, Heather Sanders admitted to using methamphetamine daily while she was pregnant with her newborn.
A pediatrician advised the court that the three older children were in good enough shape to be moved to the Ronald McDonald House. The doctor, however, recommended the newborn girl stay at the Driscoll Children’s Hospital for at least another week.
